How To Begin Housebreaking A Puppy

by admin on September 15, 2011

To begin housebreaking a puppy, you should know the right steps. It shouldn’t be something you just wing and hope your puppy will discover the right spot to do his or her “business”. It took me a while to find the right methods, but once you discover what I have it’ll seem like a piece of cake.

Finding The Right Spot

Deciding where you want your new puppy to do the duty is one of the first things you should decide. One of the best ways to housebreaking a puppy is keeping a routine. When you decide where the right place is, you should consider staying in that same vicinity every time you take your dog out. If you decide you just want to let your puppy go out the door and find the right spot on their own, you could potentially be creating some problems. You should first designate the right spot and then you will be able to let your puppy out without having to worry.

If you have a house with some yard space, it might be best to designate an area of that space to your new puppy’s potty area. This is has multiple benefits:

  • Creates an easy reward mechanism when they find the right place
  • You know where your puppy will be
  • Cleaning up will be easy since you don’t have to go searching through the yard

If you live in an apartment or have an area where you don’t want your dog to be pooping, you’re probably considering taking your dog outside for a small walk. Unfortunately, dogs aren’t big fans of litter boxes…If housebreaking a puppy for you means finding a line of grass somewhere outside, just remember…

Be Considerate When Housebreaking A Puppy

No one likes finding little piles of brown presents in their yard. No matter what you think, it doesn’t make great fertilizer. If you’re taking your puppy out, be considerate of where you’re doing so. Try not to let your puppy do their deed in another person’s lawn. Accidents may happen and maybe they sneak it while you aren’t paying attention. If so, always bring a little baggy to clean up the mess. No matter where you’re taking your dog outside, be prepared to clean it up.

Where to begin and how to get to the end might seem a little confusing or even overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to check out some resources like I did – It saved me tons of time in the end and I found the most effective ways that get the job done fast!

Even though bringing a new puppy into your home can be an exciting experience, housebreaking a puppy when you work can seem daunting at first. A lot of people really want a pet companion in their life but don’t know if they can handle it because they work all the time. This is a real concern and should be considered before bringing a puppy into your home. However, it is manageable!

This was the case for me at one time and I didn’t know how exactly it would work. Luckily through some research I found the right tips and tricks to work it out with no problems, and in the end the training was just as successful with the other dogs I trained while working from home!

I will say this though, I’ve found that you should be with your new puppy a lot the first few days. I wouldn’t recommend going out and getting a new dog when you’ll be working 8 hours the next day. Try to put it off until some possible vacation time, or at least a nice weekend.

Tips For Housebreaking A Puppy When You Work

There are a few things you can consider that will help ease the fact that you won’t be there all the time in the early stages of housebreaking.

For one, creating a confined and safe space for your puppy is a great idea. Not only does it give your puppy a new sense of it’s own territory, but it allows you to know your puppy will be safe all day wherever you put him. Crate training a puppy can come in real handy in these situations when you won’t be home. However, don’t leave your puppy inside of a crate if you’re going to be working 8 hours a day. Puppies don’t have the bladder training full grown dogs do, and they will need to use the restroom at some point during that time period.

Having a nice little area with some toys and a little water will be more than satisfactory while you’re gone. It’s easy to just lock off an area with old baby gates. Another thing to consider is to start off paper training. When you’re gone all day you don’t want to come home with little presents scattered everywhere. This happened to me a few times until I did some research and found the right methods.

Another good tip is to take your puppy out right before leaving and right when you get home. This will decrease the chances of the puppy having to go when you’re not there, depending on how long you’ll be gone.

When it comes to housebreaking a puppy when you work, things can get a little tricky. It can be done though, just do a little research like I did and hear it from the experts.
